Customes to replace multiple import levies with unified 4%FOB charge

The Federal Government has now replaced the old import fees with a single, straightforward 4% charge, which is called a unified charge. Before now, importers were paying different hidden and confusing fees like the 1% CISS and 7% collection charges. This new system is much simpler and easier to understand.

This move will help importers plan better and won’t be hit with surprise costs, making things more predictable.

The process has also moved to the B’Odogwu digital platform, which means faster cargo clearance, less human interference, and fewer chances for corruption or illegal payments.

All in all, this new setup is expected to lower the cost of bringing goods into the country. And when importers spend less, it can help bring down the prices of goods in the market or at least stop them from rising too fast. It’s a step towards running our ports in a more modern, globally accepted way.
